Authorities in Long Beach Island are investigating a fatal boating accident that occurred in waters near Barnegat Bay, leaving one person dead and another injured after both individuals were reportedly thrown from a vessel during rough water conditions. According to preliminary information from the New Jersey State Police and local marine officials, the incident took place near the Barnegat Bay and Intracoastal Waterway area, a heavily traveled region for recreational boating, especially during warmer months and holiday periods. Investigators say the vessel reportedly encountered a large wake while operating offshore, causing both occupants to be ejected into the water. After the passengers were thrown overboard, the unmanned boat allegedly continued moving and struck one of the individuals in the water. Emergency responders, including marine units, local rescue crews, and nearby boaters, quickly responded after distress calls were received. One victim was rescued and transported for medical treatment, while the second individual was later pronounced dead following the incident. Authorities have not yet publicly released the identities of the victims pending notification of family members. Officials indicated that the surviving individual is expected to recover, although the full extent of injuries has not been publicly disclosed. The New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau is leading the investigation in coordination with local agencies and the United States Coast Guard. Investigators are working to determine the precise sequence of events leading up to the accident. As part of the investigation, officials are examining whether safety measures such as life jackets and engine cutoff systems—commonly known as kill switches—were being used at the time. Marine safety experts note that sudden wakes, rough water, operator distraction, and equipment issues are among the common contributing factors in boating accidents in busy coastal waterways. The tragedy has renewed attention on boating safety throughout the New Jersey shore region, particularly as seasonal boating traffic increases. Authorities are reminding operators to maintain safe speeds, stay alert to surrounding water conditions, and ensure all safety equipment is properly functioning before departing. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released once officials complete further review and notify all affected families.
